What Elders Should know

This is the season for annual meetings, ordinations and installations of church officers.  Recently a new elder asked me what he should know and/or be doing to start off his new role.

Here is my checklist of basic things a new (or returning) elder should know or be familiar with.  This is NOT an exhaustive list.  What is on your list?

Presbytery Leader’s list of this to know and have for new and returning Elders (not in any particular order)

  • Book of Order especially sections G-1 and G -2
  • Your Congregation’s By-Laws
  • Your Congregation’s Manual of Operation
  • Your Congregation’s Child and Youth Protection Policy and Sexual Misconduct Policy
  • Know how to lead Dwelling in the Word ( and familiarity with other Missional Practices)
  • Like Facebook Pages or Instagram pages for the PCUSA, Synod of the Northeast, Presbytery of Newton and your own congregation’s pages
  • Have on your phone – Daily Prayer (PCUSA) app or other Prayer Apps
  • Regarding Ruling Elders
  • Know how to read a balance sheet
  • Know what are the favorite cookies of the other members of the session.
