The Presbytery of Newton met at First Presbyterian Church of Stanhope on May 10, 2016.

Here are some of the highlights from the meeting

The Nominating Committee presented a slate of new members for teams and committees.

The Bloomsbury Administrative Commission reported on their work so far. The Presbytery approved the following: 

  • That the Church building property (including the cemetery) and the Manse property be subdivided and placed on the market.
  • That the Administrative Commission be granted the authority to authorize the sale of both properties on behalf of the Presbytery.
  • That the Administrative Commission and the Presbytery Coordinating Team, Finance Team recommend together, following a final financial report, to the Presbytery the use of the proceeds of sale of the property.

The Mt. Freedom Administrative Commission reported on their work so far. The Presbytery approved the following:

  • That the Manse and Fellowship Building property and the Cemetery property be subdivided and the Manse/Fellowship property be put on the market to be sold.
  • That the Administrative Commission be granted the authority to authorize the sale of the Manse/Fellowship property on behalf of the Presbytery.
  • That the Cemetery be incorporated as separate not for profit Cemetery Association in accordance with New Jersey State laws and that the details of the incorporation be submitted to the Presbytery of Newton for final approval.
  • That the Administrative Commission and the Presbytery Coordinating Team recommend together, following a final financial report, to the Presbytery the use of the proceeds of the sale of the property.

Allison Seed, Board of Pension Regional Representative outlined the upcoming changes to the Board of Pensions Benefits Plan.

Stephen Choi – outgoing moderator

Worship was led by outgoing Moderator Stephen Choi and accompanied by Jammin for Jesus. During the worship service Ruling Elder Lisa Gray was installed as Moderator and Teaching Elder Nancy Young was installed as Vice-moderator of the Presbytery of Newton.  Outgoing Moderator Stephen Choi was thanked for his service to the Presbytery.

Candidate Amy Sandlin was examined and approved for ordination as a Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She has received a call as stated supply to Delaware Presbyterian Church and Frist Presbyterian Church of Oxford at Hazen.

The Presbytery approved an 18 month Nairobi Partnership Covenant. 

The Presbytery Manual of Operations and The Presbytery Child Protection Policy were adopted.

The Presbytery entered into an agreement with Elizabeth Presbytery to share a Stated Clerk Position. Following the approval of the agreement the Presbytery of Newton called Ruling Elder Jeremy Campbell to serve as the Presbytery Acting Stated Clerk starting July 1, 2016.  As soon as the Presbytery Bylaws can be amended that he be elected as the Stated Clerk. The term will run July 1, 2016 to June 20, 2018. 

The next Presbytery meeting will be September 13 at Johnsonburg Camp.
