Matthew 25 Initiative

Have you, or your congregation heard of the Matthew 25 initiative?  PC(USA) congregations all across the country are being encouraged to commit themselves to becoming a Matthew 25 Congregation.

Start with either the Mission Committee or Session of your church by exploring the ways in which you already engage in the six areas of ministry Jesus speaks of in this scriptural passage:  feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison.  Most churches are already involved in food ministries in one way or another.  This is a great starting point.

PC(USA) has taken these six areas of ministry and outreach and created three focus areas:  Building Congregational Vitality, Dismantling Structural Racism, and Eradicating Systematic Poverty.  If your session approves becoming a Matthew 25 Congregation and you fill out the application form, you will be asked which of these three areas your congregation wishes to focus on.

Our January Presbytery meeting focused on Dismantling Structural Racism, our March meeting focused on Congregational Vitality, and our May meeting will engage Eradicating Systematic Poverty.

Here in Newton Presbytery, we currently have six congregations that have become Matthew 25 Congregations:  Highlands Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, First Presbyterian Church of Newton, First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway, First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna, and First Presbyterian Church of Whippany.

A Facebook page has been created for individuals and churches to share their stories of how they are living out the teachings of Matthew 25.   Matthew 25 NP  The page is open to all that wish to share or learn more about what we are doing as the body of Christ here within our Presbytery.
