Prayers for those who see no light in the darkness

According to several websites the # 2 cause of death for 10 to 24-year-old is suicide.

Overall for veterans the second leading cause of death is suicide and the number one leading cause of death for female veterans.

The death of a young person is devastating. Death from suicide overwhelms the community, the schools, and other young people with grief, disbelief, guilt and despair.

As people of faith we are called to reach out to those who have no hope and do not see the light in the darkness.  You are encouraged to talk about how your congregation can be the hope and light. Talk to your Mission team or committee. Ask for time at the session meeting to discuss opportunities.  Invite a health care professional to speak at a workshop or forum.  At the least post around the church suicide prevention lifeline numbers.

The Suicide Prevention  Lifeline number is 1-800-273-8255.

Let us pray for guidance and for those who cannot see hope or light.

O God, from whom nothing can ever separate us, surround those who cannot see hope or light with the light of your love and with assurances that they are loved and valued.  Help them to find a way to reach out, to know that, even in the most desperate of situations and most disastrous of event, you are there – unseen and unheard, perhaps, but nevertheless present and active in our broken and hurting lives. We lift up those who know and don’t know. Let the light of your love surround them.  We pray this in the name of the One who came that we might live anew. Amen.
