August 1 -3 Presbyterians are gathering in Baltimore for the Big Tent.
The City of Baltimore was disparaged recently in a serious of tweets. As a minister who served 11 years as an urban pastor and 7 years as a staff person in an urban presbytery, I found the social media conversations about Baltimore offensive and racist.
Wonderful things happen in the city environment. God is there doing marvelous things through brilliant, grace filled and brave people. A plenary speaker at Big Tent reminded the participants that we are to be “praying for the church on broken knees”.
Let us remember in prayer this week the church and urban ministry.
God of the City,
We give thanks for the wonderful and innovative ministries of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Miami and so many other urban centers. Grant strength and wisdom to the residents and churches of the city to work together in creating an environment where your love is demonstrated, where people thrive in community, where neighborhoods are places of wholeness and health. We give you thanks for the opportunities to serve you in the city. Amen.
