Prayers for the United Methodist Church

This week a Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church me in St. Louis, Missouri for the purpose to act on the report from the Commission on a Way Forward. The Commission was authorized to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and to explore options to strengthen church unity.  The delegates passed The Traditional Plan 438 to 384.

According to the UM News website, The Traditional Plan strengthens the domination’s prohibitions against clergy officiating at same-sex union or  seeing “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” The plan also encourages those who will not obey church prohibitions to find another church home.

The General Conference was difficult and painful for all participants.  The path forward will be tumultuous.  Let us remember in prayer our brothers and sisters of the United Methodist Church as they work together on the best ways to move forward in God’s ministry.

God of all,

Sometimes as communities of faith we find ourselves at a crossroad and cannot agree or determine which direction to take.  We find ourselves perplexed, angry, frustrated and bewildered to where you are calling us to go together or not.

Our sisters and brothers of the United Methodist Church are at that crossroad. They find themselves both corporately and personally in a place where they need to discern the path forward.  They are asking the question “Now what Lord?”

Guide them in the direction you are leading.  Guide them to the places where they can discern the work of the Holy Spirit for the congregation and the individual.

Help us to find ways to support our brothers and sisters who are angry, frustrated, and bewildered.

You are a God of love and guidance. Amen.
